The Bexar County Democratic Party today will take a page from the Tea Party's handbook, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.
For years, Tea Party groups have 'denounced' Republicans for being insufficiently conservative. Today, Bexar County Democratic Party Chairman Manuel Medina will denounce U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo), one of the most popular Democratic politicians in Texas, for being insufficiently liberal.
"Our own Congressman, Henry Cuellar, is not representing our values," Medina said.
Cuellar's sin? Sponsoring Legislation that would speed the deportations of Central American immigrants who have no right to remain in the U.S.
Medina calls that 'inhumane.'
"The human thing to do is treat them with a little decency," Medina said. "If they made it this far and their parents are already here, why not let them stay?"
The Democratic Party leaders will also make another push to have San Antonio declare itself to be a 'Sanctuary City,' where officials are not allowed to inquire about the immigration status of people they encounter, and where undocumented immigrants are welcomed.
The Bexar County Democrats appear to be bucking public opinion on this issue. In a new Vox Populi poll, 62% of Americans, including a majority of Democrats and Hispanics, believe that already lax immigration policies, incluidng the President's 'Deferred Action' program, led to the current crisis, and 52% disagree with President Obama's claim that inaction by Republicans on approving immigration reform is responsible for the immigrant influx.
