Human Mad Cow Death Reported in Texas

Posted June 5th, 2014 @ 11:51am

A person has died in a Texas hospital from Mad Cow Disease, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported today.

"The history of this patient includes extensive travel to Europe and the Middle East, and this infection likely occurred outside of the United States," the Health Department said.

It said there are 'no public health risks' in Texas associated with Mad Cow Disease, and no threats to Texas cattle.

Mad Cow Disease, technically known as Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disorder,' is a rare fatal brain disorder first described in 1996 in the United Kingdom and association with beef consumption overseas.

This is the fourth confirmed case of Mad Cow in the United States.

Officials did not release information on the patient, or say where the patient died, only that it happened 'in Texas.'
