Man Dies in South Side Fire
Posted Tuesday, August 19th 2014 @ 12pm

A man was pulled from a burning mobile home on the city's southeast side this morning, and was rushed to Brooke Army Medical Center where he died, Newsradio 1200 WOAI's Michael Main reports.

It happened about 3AM in the 5500 block of Firestar Trail, which is near New Sulphur Springs Road.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were shooting out of the mobile home, and burglar bars made it more difficult for firefighters to get inside.

The fire was concentrated in a back bedroom.  The victim was found near the front door.

Firefighters say there were no indications that there were smoke alarms in the mobile home.

Meanwhile, a spectacular fire in La Vernia this morning destroyed a large home

It happened in the 1100 block of Zuehl Crossing.

Firefighters from eight communities around Guadalupe County helped fight the fire in the two story home, which was a total loss.

Firefighters had to shuttle water from a hydrant a half mile away, as there were no fire hydrants near the home.

No one was hurt in this fire, and there is no word on a cause for either fire.
