Mystery Texas Rabies Carrier has Health Officials Scrambling

The Texas Department of State Health Services is asking for the public's help in identifying a woman in Round rock, north of Austin, who may be infected with rabies, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

The woman came in contact with a bat while leaving a Wal-Mart in Round Rock earlier this week.

"Contact with a bat presents a high risk of rabies, a viral illness that can be transmitted to humans through an infected animal's saliva," The State Health Department said.  "The illness can be prevented with treatment before symptoms begin.  However, once a person has symptoms, the disease is almost always fatal."
