A 63 year old North East ISD Police Officer was injured today when he was hit by a car while he was directing traffic for a funeral procession at Highway 90 and General McMullen on the city's west side, police tell 1200 WOAI news.
Police Sgt. Javier Salazar says it all started when the driver of an SUV was coming around the turn on the cloverleaf exit and was temporarily distracted by something inside his vehicle.
By the time he looked up, a car was so close to him that he couldn't avoid hitting it.
She says the SUV shoved the car into the officer's motorcycle.
"The officer went down, and EMS got here and they were able to stabilize him on the scene," Salazar said.
He says the officer's injuries are not life threatening.
The woman who was in the car is also hospitalized, and the SUV driver may be in trouble.
"At this point we know that alcohol was not a factor, but it does seem at this point that driver inattention will go on the accident report," Salazar said.
