Police Drug Raid Ends in Gunfire

A San Antonio Police Officer opened fire early today during a drug raid on the city's east side, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

It happened in the 5200 block of Village Row, which is located off Rittiman Road.

Police Sgt. Javier Salazar says it started when officers raided the home on a drug charge.  He says the suspect barricaded himself inside his bedroom.  The officer forced his way inside and got into a struggle with the suspect.

"So they were both engaged in a physical fight, and the sergeant discharged his weapon at some point during that struggle," Salazar said.  "One time."

At that point, officers rushed in and disarmed the suspect.

"Thankfully, that suspect was disarmed fairly quickly by that sergeant and by other officers who came to his aid," he said.  "No further shots were fired."

The suspect is in custody and is facing a variety of charges.  The sergeant was in uniform at the time.

Nobody was injured and the shot didn't hit anybody.
