Thelma and Louise, the two headed turtle at the San Antonio Zoo which made national news when it was born last year, has died at the age of 13 months, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

"Despite having great vigor in her daily life, her last few months showed lack of growth," the Zoo said in a statement.  The exact cause of death has not been determined.

Thelma and Louise was a big attraction at the Zoo's Friedrich Aquarium, receiving daily intensive care and monitoring to insure she received 'the highest quality of life.'

"Thelma and Louise created excitement around the world as far away as Russian and Australia," the Zoo said.  "Since her debut, thousands of San Antonio Zoo guests were able to experience her uniqueness up close and personal.  Her recent first birthday celebration was a touching event as hundreds of children visited the Zoo to create individual birthday cards."

Experts say so called 'bicephalic' turtles are not that uncommon in snakes and turtles.

The Zoo asked fans to keep Thelma and Louise' memory alive by continuing to support and donate to turtle and tortoise conservation efforts.
