HauerTo: Keep Your House Cool Without Fighting the Thermostat

Every summer, it happens.

Someone in the house turns the thermostat down to 68.

Someone else immediately turns it back up to 74.

Congratulations—you've officially entered air conditioning season.

The good news is there are plenty of ways to keep your house cooler without touching the thermostat every ten minutes... or getting your electric bill that looks like a car payment.

Hack #1: Close the Curtains Before the Sun Moves In

Sunlight is great... until it's turning your living room into a greenhouse.

Keep blinds and curtains closed on the sunny side of the house during the hottest part of the day.

It's one of the easiest ways to keep indoor temperatures down, and your A/C won't have to work nearly as hard.

Hack #2: Let the Ceiling Fan Do Its Job

Here's something a lot of people don't know:

During the summer, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise. That pushes cool air downward and helps the room feel cooler.

It won't lower the temperature—but it can make you feel several degrees more comfortable.

Hack #3: Don't Heat Up the Kitchen

If it's 95 degrees outside, maybe tonight isn't the night to bake lasagna.

Use the grill, an air fryer, a slow cooker, or even a cold dinner once in a while.

The less heat you create inside, the less your air conditioner has to fight.

Hack #4: Keep the Bedroom Cool

You don't have to cool the whole house like a meat locker just to sleep comfortably.

Use a fan, lightweight bedding, and if possible, keep your bedroom door open so cool air can circulate.

A good night's sleep makes every hot day a little easier.

Hack #5: Stop Opening the Door Every Five Minutes

Every time someone says,

"Let's see how hot it is..."

...your air conditioner sighs.

Limit trips in and out, especially during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Your house will stay cooler, and your energy bill won't take quite as much of a beating.

Keeping your house cool doesn't have to mean living in the dark or arguing over the thermostat.

A few small habits can make a surprisingly big difference.

And if someone in your family is still secretly lowering the thermostat when nobody's looking...

Well... at least now you'll know why the electric bill went up.
