This FEEL GOOD comes from last night's ESPY Awards in downtown LA, and a very inspirational man named Rob Mendez. Rob was born with no arms or legs and grew up loving sports. Rob Mendez is now Coach Mendez, a high school football coach in Saratoga, California. He heads up the JV Team at Prospect High School. They finished second in the conference last season.
The thing that sets Rob apart from almost every other coach is that he's never played football! Not because he didn't want to, but because he couldn't. Rob Mendez was born with Tetre-Amelia Syndrome. It's a rare condition classified by the loss of all 4 limbs. So, Rob has no arms and no legs. Yet, it's never dampened the love of the game. As a kid, he had a special device that allowed him to play Madden video games, which is where he learned a lot about football strategy.
He served as team manager of his high school football team, where several of his friends played. Eventually, he became the team's offensive coordinator, coaching the quarterback. He continues to rise the coaching ranks and last night, he ranked high in our hearts with his motivating speech. He was honored with the Jimmy V Award For Perseverance. Listen to his inspiring words:
