How To Get Kids To Tell You About Their Day

My kids are notorious for answering with one word (usually "fine") or not answering at all. So how can you get your kids to interact with you?

Feed them first. They need energy.

Experiment with timing. Some need time to decompress. Maybe try asking later in the evening.

Pair your questions with an activity. Playing catch, kicking the soccer ball, riding bikes.

Use information you already have about their classroom, teacher, etc.

Ask specific but open-ended questions. Questions like 'What was the best part of your day?' and 'Did anyone in your class do anything funny? Tell me about it!'

Don’t immediately jump into problem-solving mode.
