The Alamo Colleges District is kicking off their first-ever Giving Day on Thursday, May 5. Giving Day is a 24-hour online fundraiser to raise money for all five community colleges within the district. Those include Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, San Antonio College and St. Philip's College. The goal is to raise $100,000. Money raised will support programs including student scholarships and student advocacy centers. Those centers are essential as more than 60% of ACD students are food insecure or housing insecure. "You're helping to meet that student's basic needs," said Richard Farias, the director of annual giving for the Alamo Colleges Foundation. "That way they can go on and pursue their college education without those kinds of barriers."
"An investment is an investment in a student, but by extension is an investment in their family's overall wellness and financial health," said Farias. "It helps end generational poverty, because you're investing in that student, which helps their entire family, which in turn helps this entire community."
