Between a sexual assault and recent thefts and break ins, more neighborhoods are turning to the Cellular on Patrol program. It's a program where trained, unarmed volunteers serve as the eyes and ears for Bexar County deputies, alerting dispatch to any crimes or activity. Right now, 59 neighborhoods have residents participating.
All members have to go through a free training, taught by BCSO. They also must pass a background check. Then, they work with their teammates to observe their own neighborhoods, with their cell phones at the ready to alert dispatch to any concerns. Right now, there are about 450 volunteers, hundreds fewer than there were pre-pandemic.
The next C.O.P. training is on December 14 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bexar County Sheriff's Office's East Substation. For more information, you can email score@bexar.org with the subject line "Cellular on Patrol."
