PETA Wants Spurs Name Change; Leaders Gets Marvel Update

PETA has struck again.

The animal rights group wants the San Antonio Spurs to change their name.

This is how PETA explained it in a press release:

"With the San Antonio Spurs fresh off their thrilling NBA Finals run, PETA is passing the team a winning play for next season: break away from a name that celebrates sharp metal objects designed to torment animals, and rebrand as the San Antonio Spurs -- as in, mushroom sports -- and for good reason. In a letter sent today to managing partner Peter J. Holt, PETA explains that promoting spurs can be seen as glorifying how animals abused in rodeos endure fear and trauma, broken bones and even fatal injuries, whereas choosing to embrace mushrooms would be the (moral) thing to do -- and a true (champion) move: Texas is proud of its mushroom industry, and eating these nutritional all-stars supports brain and heart health and helps reduce cancer risk."

Meantime, city leaders are expected to receive an update Wednesday on plans for a new downtown home for the San Antonio Spurs and the broader sports and entertainment district tied to Project Marvel. The briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday in City Council chambers and is open to the public.
