The Preparada is typically made with Smirnoff, and people love to sip while at NIOSA, which is April 25 to April 28 this year. While NIOSA has been around for many years (since 1936!), the preparadas weren't served up until 2011 as a way to offer something different during Fiesta, longtime volunteer Rose Moran said. The love still runs deep as NIOSA sold 18,000 servings last year! If you do the math, that's 4,500 a DAY!
Each area offers its own twist to the drink, adding different fruits or colors to the recipe, Moran said. A mix of watermelon will be in Haymarket; South of the Border and the Mexican Market will include honeydew melon; and the Irish Flats will feature Granny Smith apples.
You can also make your own to carry NIOSA with you all year:
·1 (11-ounce) bottle of Seagram's flavored Malt Beverage
·3 ounces of diced fruit (strawberry, cantaloupe, cucumber, watermelon or honeydew melon, or Granny Smith apples)
·1 tablespoon of chamoy
·1 teaspoon of chili lime seasoning
·Ice
Add a cup of ice to your mixing glass, followed by your portion of fruit. Top with Seagrams of choice. Stir in chamoy and chili lime seasoning and enjoy. Or, head on down to NIOSA and grab one or two (but beware! They can do damage so please drink responsibly).
